Landscape drawings created using mixed media...
This glacial lake on New Zealand's South Island is surrounded by mountains and lush woodlands.
I fell in love with the vibrant colours of its waters and how the sunlight glinted off of the gentle undulations of the lake - this, I've tried to capture in my illustration.
The historic wooden alleyways of Bryggen, Bergen's old Wharf, are a wonder. Rich in colour, texture, light and shadow, they provide an endless source of inspiration for artwork, and are a great place to while away the afternoon if you ever find yourself in that part of the world.
The sunlight warming the already golden woodwork in this alleyway was too tempting not to draw.
Another historic alleyway in Bergen's old Wharf.
I tried to capture the aged, worn texture of the wood in this piece, along with the myriad of surfaces refracting light and colour into the alley.
The lush green gardens at the Heian Shrine are a delight to meander through. If you follow the path you'll come to these stepping stones across a large pond known as Garyu-Kyo or "lying down dragon bridge" as the stones are said to give the impression of stepping on the back scales of a dragon.
A beautiful Shinto shrine in Kyoto, whose brilliant vermillion red 'torii' gates snake the paths up Mt. Inari. A leafy, peaceful, spiritual place dedicated to the God of good harvests and business.
I wanted this drawing to feel fluid and to emulate the free brushstrokes used in Japanese calligraphy.
The forests of Snowdonia hold a special, nostalgic place in my heart! We spent many a time here as a family when my sister and I were very young creatures and nowadays it still holds a rather magical sway over me.
I wanted the colour palate I chose in this piece to reflect that nostalgic feeling, whilst still capturing the calm, peaceful feeling of a day spent walking under the forest canopy.
Walking in the shadow of giants. You'd be forgiven for thinking that these huge limestone rock formations were put here by the Gods of old... maybe they were!.
I wanted to create a light, dreamy feel to this one, as if the subject was walking into another land or time.
